Omommomo: To omit tedious details.

I hope we can make this our mantra for the term.

"omommomo (O-mo-MO-mo)  Ainu

People can go on and on, filling your head with the endless details of their stories and dramas. Sometimes the urge to flee is intense when encountering a talkative individual who seems insensitive to normal social nonverbal cues. Imprisoned by the grasp of their ramblings, remaining in their presence is challenging. Throughout the twistings and turnings of their tales you wonder when they will finally get to the point. Or perhaps the shroud of negativity that persists through the boring recounting is what demands escape. This is when you wish the person had developed the skill to omommomo. This term is traditionally used during the telling of long, chanting ancient Ainu narratives, and honors the audience by sparing them the plethora of particulars with which they are already familiar. Passing over these elements of the story actually enhances the overall effect. Good advice, for a succinct retelling often conveys a more powerful, penetrating message. 'To make a long story short." invites the listener to pay more attention, to open their hearts and listen between the phrases for the essence of the sharing.

Editing myself can deepen a communication exchange" (La Cerva, 1999).

  1. Hi Nancy! Great post! I don't think that I am saying that chant right... maybe you can mention it in seminar (I'm one of your students in CompII-07). I agree with what you posted and even though I cannot pronounce it right, I know exactly what you mean! Quick question...I just started up my free writing again and was thinking about posting some poems on my blog or even FaceBook, but I am concerned with plagiarism- how do I go about that without anyone copying my writing? Any suggestions? Oh yeah, and how am I supposed to post this- what profile should I select? As far as I know, I only have an AIM account. Is that what I should use? Oh, by the way, I love your background! Where can I change mine? I am so new to all of this technology! :) Thank you!

  3. Nancy, I really enjoyed reading your post. I know exactly what you mean when listening to someone go on and on about their story and taking forever to get to the point. It is very true that it can cause the story to become quite boring. I know a few people that like to talk that way; they just have to get the whole story out every single time. I found it very interesting however, that it is called "omommomo". Not really a word you hear everyday. Thank you for sharing this with me!
